It's alive

I know, I know, I know...I SUCK

I've been lurking, but haven't had much to say about weight stuff.  I would love to blog about all the other crap in my life but who cares about that.  Things are about to hit full stride in a couple of weeks so get ready.  I'm gonna need my blog friends to get me through this liquid diet.

So here is a quick and dirty of my life these days...

I have my last appointment with my surgeon and my pre-admitting test appointment on Thursday.  I'm trying to put a list questions together that I should be asking, but I really don't know what I should be asking.  If you have any suggestions PLEASE leave a comment. I start my liquid diet on August 9th, then its surgery time on August 23rd.

I do have a few questions for my veteran banders out there
  1. Do you have or where did you find a sample diet?  I'm meeting with the dietitian again, but I want a real life answer of what my diet should consist of.
  2. Any suggestions on lactose free shakes?  What is your favorite brand and/or flavor
  3. How much weight, if any did you lose during the pre-op diet?
My goal of the post is a bit different this time. Since I'm always such a Debbie Downer I thought it would be nice to report a victory.  I'm drinking water...lots of water!  I haven't kicked the coffee, but the diet coke hasn't been the beverage of choice for a while now.  I've been doing so well that my body continues to ask for it so now I have no choice.  baby steps folks..baby steps.  My next goal is to focus on a meal plan.  I'm going to put my secretarial skills to work and organize my menu.

Wish me Luck!

  1. Good to hear from you again. In answer to your questions, I do not follow any special diet. I eat all foods in moderation. I did write down my food, calories and protein for the first three months or so. I tried to shoot for no more than 1,200 - 1,300 calories per day. My only rule is to eat only when hungry. I can't help you with the lactose free shakes. I also didn't do a pre-op diet so I can't answer that one either.

  2. Here are some questions you might want to ask:

Will I have a catheter when I wake up?

How long after surgery before I can drive/exercise/sex?

What type and size of band will I have?

How often is slipping an issue with your patients?

When is fu appt after surgery?

How do you handle fills? How often?

What is pre and post op diets?

Where do you place the port?

How many incisions will I have?

What should prompt me to call you post op?

How long will I be in hospital?

Can I get a prescription for anti-nausea and/or pain medicine prior to surgery so I’ll have them?

Don't know anything about lactose free shakes. Sorry.

My preop was low carb/high protein, but I was far from perfect and didn't lose anything preop. I had to be on clear liquids 24 hrs prior and then 48 hrs after. Then full liquids for 5 days. I lost about 8 lbs during that time. Good luck!

  4. I can tell you I only lost 4 lbs on my 1 week preop diet. I hated that I lost so little compared to others, but the most important thing I have learned is not to compare yourself to others, as we all lose weight differently.

In regards to lactose free protien shakes, here is a suggestion. Have you ever tried Silk Almond Milk? It is lactose free and it mixes very well with the power protien. I use it with Body Fortress Whey Protien in either chocolate or vanilla flavor (they sell it at Wal Mart). I'm not lactose intolerant, but it is less calories than milk. One shake is 26g of protien.

Good work on drinking the water!
