You Dropped a Bomb on Me

Today at 8:30am I had my final appointment with my surgeon.  The first person to see me was the intern and we reviewed everything.  She gave me the side eye about gaining 10 pounds since March, but other than a mild case of esophagus something or other I was primed and ready to go.  So she folded up her notes and off she went.

Enter BOMB from the left

In walks my surgeon and he says a few things that I can't remember and then he starts in with my esophagus issue.  He says a few other things which is making my throat close and then leans way back in the chair.  Due to this mild esophagus issue I am no longer a good candidate for the Lap Band.  Once the band begins to get tighter my esophagus will begin to close.  Essentially causing more issues and blah blah blah.  I have no idea what exactly was said cause I went blank around the time I'm no longer a candidate.

At this point I'm doing my best to hold it together.  I did wear my big girl pants because I was already expecting to get in trouble over my 10 pound gain.  Little did I know he didn't even read that far in my chart.  So he continues to talk and I continue to hold back the tears and just when I'm about ready to be mopped up he says that I would be a very successful bypass candidate.

So now I'm blubbering all over the outfit I worked so hard to fit into.  I ask him to explain the bypass again so I can understand what's involved.  He does but I don't really remember a word of what he said.  Thankfully he said I could take a week and call his office with my answer.  I try to finish up the conversation with some sort of dignity and assure him that I will let him know what my decision will be.

I'm lost right now

  6. oh my gosh, i am SO SORRY. i can imagine your stress and anxiety and disappointment. during my pre-band period there was a day when some confusion led me to believe i was not a "suitable candidate" for the band and i cried all night long...cried until i was in the bathroom puking. it's hard to see something slip away that you want and NEED so much. luckily my situation worked out...AND YOURS WILL TOO. keep thinking positively, keep praying and know that one way or another you are going to find a suitable tool to help you through your weight-loss! :)

  7. I was just thinking about how we need a gastric chic around here to balance us out so this is perfect. In all seriousness, gastric is another very successful type of weight loss surgery. My mother had it done before it really got perfected and she still did very well with it. I know this is a shocker, though, and am sorry you were hit with it.

  10. whatever you decide to go with, do your research (if you haven't already). i know when i wanted to get the lap band all i researched was gastric bypass and lap band. and i knew for sure i didn't want gastric. it turns out i had totally overlooked the gastric sleeve. if you haven't already i would check it out. its less drastic than the bypass. if you already know about it but you want the bypass instead than nevermind that. i hate to be one of those people that tells you things you already know (how annoying). but just wanted to put it out there in case you, like me, had never even considered it. if you have any questions about it let me know.
